Why UAN Needs Special Protection

UAN is a blended nitrogen source made up of: 50% urea (solid nitrogen), 25% ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺), and 25% nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻). This mixture is vulnerable to multiple losses: Ammonia volatilization (from the urea component), Leaching (from the nitrate component), Denitrification (from nitrate in saturated soils). Without protection, a significant portion of UAN nitrogen can be lost before crops can access it — particularly when broadcast without immediate incorporation.

Application Guidelines

Target Fertilizers: UAN 28–32%. Application Method: Add ARM UAN™ directly into UAN storage tanks or mix immediately before field application. Application Rates: Will be based on liters per tonne of UAN (final rates pending label). Always agitate tanks before and during application for even distribution.

What You Believe vs. What the Data Shows

Myth
"I band it deep. I'm covered."
Reality
Banding reduces risk — it does not eliminate it. Even banded urea lost 13–18% of applied N in the 2025 U of Manitoba controlled study. Virginia Tech found UAN banded at 2–3 cm lost 15–32%. Only deep injection brought losses below 1%.
Every cm shallower = ~7–10% more nitrogen lost. At 1" depth, you're still in the high-risk zone.
Myth
"My soils hold N. I'm on heavy ground."
Reality
pH matters more than texture. Urea hydrolysis spikes band pH to 9.0+ within 18 hours. At pH 9.0, half the nitrogen exists as ammonia gas. At pH 9.5, it's 80%. This happens in every soil type, every study.
At pH 7.5 soil + 160 lbs N/ac: estimated 40–50% loss = 64–80 lbs N/ac gone.
Myth
"We don't get extreme weather here."
Reality
You don't need extreme weather. The U of Manitoba 2025 study ran at 25°C and 50% humidity — a pleasant spring day. Untreated banded urea still lost 16 lbs N/ac on sandy soil. No wind. No drought. Just normal chemistry.
Best-case scenario (cool + rain + sealed slot + low pH) still costs $8–$16/ac.

Reality
