The Biology That Pays You Back

Isolation Mode

As you plan for 2027, here is a category that is easy to misjudge: biologicals. Judge them as fertilizer and they will disappoint you. Judge them as a multiplier on the fertility you already bought, and the math gets interesting.

Start with a number worth sitting with: growers spend heavily per acre to grow a crop, yet a seed only ever makes direct contact with a small fraction of the soil in a field. The rest of your nutrients sit out there, waiting on a root to reach them — a gap we’ve written about in better utilization of the soil we have.

What inoculants actually do

Biological inoculants don’t add nutrients. They extend the plant’s reach. Mycorrhizal fungi colonize roots and send out a fine hyphal network that explores far more soil volume than roots alone, improving access to less-mobile nutrients like phosphorus. Rhizobium, in pulses, fixes atmospheric nitrogen in partnership with the plant. Both expand the root absorption zone and improve the pathways nutrients travel into the crop.

The practical effect: more of the fertility already in the ground actually gets found and used. That’s why we frame biology as a multiplier — it works on your fertility program, not instead of it.

Where the return comes from

The best return on a biological shows up when it sits on top of a sound fertility base. Turn the fertility program on with a strong foundation, then let biology widen the net that captures it. Used that way — alongside granular fertility and good soil testing — inoculants are one of the lower-cost ways to lift nutrient access per acre.

Explore the options in biological inoculants, and build them into your 2027 plan with your Taurus rep — early, while you’re locking the rest of the program.
