Why Doesn’t Canola Use the Same Biology as Wheat, Peas or Soybeans?

The short answer: Because crop–microbe relationships are specific. Canola belongs to the Brassicaceae family, which generally does not form the functional arbuscular-mycorrhizal symbiosis common in many cereals, pulses and oilseeds. That is why a different root-associated fungus such as Serendipita indica is agronomically interesting for canola.

Brassicas are different below ground

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi form productive partnerships with a large share of crop species, but Brassicaceae are a well-known exception. Research reviews describe the family as generally non-arbuscular-mycorrhizal. Canola therefore should not be treated as if it has the same fungal partnership as wheat, corn, peas or soybeans.

That matters whenever biological products are compared. “Fungal inoculant” is not a single category. The fungus has to be capable of interacting with the crop.

Where Serendipita fits

Serendipita indica is a beneficial root-colonizing endophytic fungus, not an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus. Premier Tech identifies PTB299 Serendipita indica as the biological technology in AGTIV IGNITE and positions it for crops including canola and cereals.

Research on Brassicaceae microbiomes has highlighted Serendipita as one of the beneficial root associates capable of colonizing Brassica-family roots even though conventional arbuscular mycorrhizae generally do not form a functional symbiosis.

The broader lesson: biologicals should be crop-specific

This is the same principle seen with rhizobia. Soybean requires a different nitrogen-fixing symbiont than pea or lentil. Canola requires a different fungal strategy than crops that readily form arbuscular mycorrhizae. The biology of the crop should determine the biology in the jug or on the seed.

That is a more useful way to evaluate inoculants than asking whether one biological is “better” than another. They may be designed for completely different host relationships.

Pair biology with strong establishment agronomy

Canola is also highly sensitive to seed-zone fertilizer injury. A biological seed treatment cannot undo ammonia toxicity, salt stress or poor fertilizer placement. The strongest program protects stand establishment first, then uses targeted seed-applied technologies to support the crop during early growth.

In other words: protect the seed, choose a biological compatible with canola, and build the fertility program around access, not simply pounds applied.
